color and border problems in FMEW exercise #3

I just got Expression Web and Cheryl's Foundations (FMEW) book on Thursday, did a quick readthrough of Chapters 1 through 7, then sat down to do the exercises. After several hours of tinkering and troubleshooting--including uninstalling and reinstalling EW--I'm still not through the exercises in Chapter 3. Some problems may be atttributed to EW bugs while others are definately related to errors in FMEW.

    Problem #1: Page 65

With Page properties on the body tag set to 'CSS inline style', after setting background color to white and text color to black , only the background-color code appears in the <body> tag. When I return to Page Properties, text color is still on Automatic. When I try again  (and again...), to set text to black and click OK, color is sill not added to the code and the page does not indicate it has been changed (no * at the end of the file name). However, if I change text color to some color other than black, then text color code is added and the file indicates that it has changed.

Problem #2a: Page 66  [FMEW error]

On page 66 FMEW refers to  "Hyperlink state colors" which doesn't exist on the Format tab.

Problem #2b: Page 66  [EW & FMEW errors]

Consequently, I applied actual colors (the same, though, as the automic colors) for the pseudo-class hperlinks, but after clicking OK, no code was set for the hyperlinks. Incidently, here too, when the link colors are set to colors other than those that are the automatic colors, the text code is added and the file indicates that it has changed.

It seems that problems #1 and #2b prevent one from overriding automatic colors when the applied colors are the same as the default colors.

Problem #3: Page 66  [FMEW error]

The Note at the bottom of page 66 referes to the 'Quick Link bar.' This is an error, I presume. Shouldn't it  read, "Quick Tag bar?'

    Problem #4: Page 66
In step 6 when the borders are applied, among other problems, the <div> tags for the Menu Section and Content disappear!

    Problem #5: Page 67

Now, with Page properties on the body tag set to 'CSS rules', when I apply the border property, again, the the <div> tags for the Menu Section and Content have disappeared.

In sum, FMEW (so far, specifically, pages 65-68) does not represent, accurately, EW or what happens  when instructions are followed using the ch3exercise1.txt file.

I hope someone can confirm and will discuss these problems, as problems like these shake one's confidence in EW and FMEW and, not to say the lease, in one's self.

    In orderL

    1. You must select a color in the block of colors or using the More Colors link. Otherwise it will continue to use automatic.

    color chooser

    2. Hyperlink states refers to the

Hyperlink, Visited hyperlink, Active hyperlink and Hovered hyperlink options on the right side of the Formatting tab.

    hyperlink states

     3. Yes, that should have been caught since it is not consistent.

4-6. This is a change in behavior in Expression Web. At the time the book was written the behavior of wiping out the first two divs and replacing them with one div was not what was happening with the CTP which is what most of the book was written using.

Not only that when I just checked on a clean install on a Windows XP computer here ctrl+y is not working to allow you to undo and redo steps.

I will pop up  acouple of quick screen captures of what I'm seeing now with  notes. I will post the screen clips over on the book site under errata and put a link in this thread.

FWIW, a couple of other things have cropped up since the book left my hands as well. For examle when I first got this new tablet I could see thumbnails when browsing images with Expression Web. Then after a Windows update I lost that ability (one I also did not have during the beta.)

Regarding reply #1, the black color that wasn't being set for text color was from the block of Standard Colors on the color picker. The same is true for the problem applying the colors for the hyperlinks; i.e., the colors applied but not set were from the block of Standard Colors.
It's as if EW, knowing that the color selected is the same as the automatic color, doesn't bother to generate the code. Certainly, such a state is problematic.

Regarding comments in reply #4-6, certainly we don't need to have our functional <div>s stripped. Do you have a pipeline to the EW coders at MS in orderso that problem can be corrected?

BTW, having moved on to Exercise 3-3, I discovered that the instructions in 3-3, step 9 also need fixing (i.e., one is instructed to move the right rather than the left side of the main content <div> and, of course then, the width is wrong).

Finally, have you considered adding a tag for FMEW to this forum?

Re: color and border problems in FMEW exercise #3

I will file a bug on the behavior with removing the divs and then I'll post back here the link to bug it.

What I find strange is that I did those exercises dozens of times during the writing of the book. I'm sure my tech editor did all the exercises as well. Plus I used the same exercises in classes starting Augsust 2006 during the beta and CTP and this problem was not found by anyone. Yet in the last week one of my students had the same problem and I can replicate it as well now with the divs being removed and a single new one replacing two different divs. So you can bet I'll be asking about it.

I can create a forum section for the book here. that isn't a problem. :-)
