As far as no v3 release I sort of consider media luckier than web in that there wasn't a rush to release it with major bugs at release.

I'll post whatever I can as I find out more.

This falls under category 3 on your discussion list:

Please ask the Expression team to either confirm or deny that Expression Media has been killed off.

iView Media Pro was a great product and then MS bought it. They moved the development team from London to Seattle so must have had serious plans for it. However 2 releases on and the product is little different from what they acquired - some bugs fixed, others introduced, plus some naff rebranding!

There has been zero input from MS on the Expression Media forum for many months now, although the main contact did have major surgery late last year. The current hot thread is a discussion on the alternative products on the market. Not exactly a good advert for MS. Expression Media, after being dropped from Studio v3 for 'strategic' reasons, has now also dropped off of the various MS online stores.

I'm hoping that the product still has a future as, quirks aside, I think it is still the best DAM software. However if the plug has been pulled then the user base deserves to be told. I have over 150,000 images catalogued in Expression Media, and know of many users with significantly more than that. As a computer programmer I know I can extract all the data I require so it's not the end of the world for me. However it will take a significant amount of effort to migrate to another solution. I use the XML export facility combined with XSL stylesheets to create web galleries. Other solutions, if able to export data, can't do so in a clean, usable manner. For other less computer literate users it will be a major blow, not for financial reasons but for the sheer effort that has been invested over the years in cataloguing photos.

Many thanks,

Ian

Yes there are content management systems (CMS) that allow people without technical skills to add content but they don't create the site, its look & feel or back-end. That is not what neither Dreamweaver nor Expression Web is designed for though you can use them to modify the look and feel of most CMS or add content to a static site.

There isn't a program that can give you power without having to learn. The good news is that you don't have to learn everything a pro needs to know to have a good looking site.

I'd suggest getting the Expression Web trial and the asset file for the Basic Website video tutorial on this site and work along with the video. You may find it easier than you think.

What would you recommend for someone who does NOT know (nor want to know) HTML? I've been using Google Sites and find it very functional but simplistic in the ability to tailor the look and feel. I'm now looking to upgrade for more power.

Expression Design is not Fireworks and in its present state Design is best suited to work worth Blend- XAML projects but now that Design is being included with web maybe that will change since there were some very nice vector and bitmap tools in the beta version of Expression Design that were not is the original release versions. So hopefully those will return. You can set Expression Web to use Expression Design as its default graphics editor that sort of round trips but not in the same way as CS3. See by-expression.com/.../ConfiguringEditorsinExpressionWeb.aspx

Remember that compared to Dreamweaver EW is a young product. you may want to go to http://connect.microsoft.com and join the Expressions Studio feedback group. Thon you can file your round tip suggestion so o will reach the products team.

I think one of the killer features of DW3 is the "Round Trip Graphics Editing". I can't seem to find it in EW2 Studio. Surely, Web/Design will work together (seamlessly) like DW/Fireworks do? For every jpg/gif it should let me define a complex source graphic (usually a layered PNG).

He COULD, but he'd miss all the support provided by the integrated development environment.

That's just what products like xWeb and DW provide - an IDE. And in some sense the challenge is greater because Web development is always a mix of languages, not just one.
